For Our Residents
About Us: The Macomb Township Professional Firefighters Union Local 5023 is an affiliate of the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union. Our union was established on November 1st of 2014 and had only 7 members which we call our “Founding Fathers”. After years of challenges, we were able to get to the 31 member roster we have today. Although that seems like a good number, it is significantly lower than national standards. NFPA 1710 specifies a minimum of 15-17 firefighters on a low hazard initial alarm. Currently, we only have 10 full time firefighters on duty if we are at full staffing for the day. Our mission is to bring Macomb Township proper full time staffing and the best quality care for the safety of our residents and our members. "Today, its about THEM" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Support Senate Bill 319! Senate Bill 319 makes minimum staffing levels a mandatory subject of bargaining. Currently, we can not discuss staffing levels in negotiations. This bill does not mandate what the staffing will be, but simply allows unions to have the conversation with the city/township officials. With this house bill passed not only would it help our mission of better staffing for Macomb Township, it would also help departments across that state of Michigan! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our push to meet NFPA 1710 standards NFPA 1710 provides a standardized framework for the organization and deployment of fire suppression, emergency medical services, and special operations by career fire departments, ensuring a consistent level of public safety and firefighter efficiency. One of the key benefits of NFPA 1710 is that it sets measurable benchmarks to improve emergency response outcomes. For example, the standard recommends that the first responding fire unit should arrive on scene within 4 minutes of travel time for 90% of all incidents, and that the total response time—including call processing and turnout—should be within 6 minutes and 20 seconds for 90% of calls. Additionally, for structure fires, NFPA 1710 specifies that at least 15–17 firefighters should arrive on scene within 8 minutes (travel time) for 90% of incidents to effectively perform critical fireground tasks such as search and rescue, fire attack, ventilation, and water supply. By adhering to these standards, departments can ensure faster response times, safer and more effective incident operations, and better outcomes for both civilians and emergency personnel. Ultimately, NFPA 1710 supports the delivery of effective, efficient, and equitable emergency services, building greater public trust and reducing risks across communities. Currently, we have a 10 firefighter maximum and 8 firefighter minimum daily staffing. This daily short staffing is dangerous for both the residents and firefighters. Contact your township officials and tell them to staff their department properly!
